Associates

Spare Tyre’s Associates are artists with whom we have a mutual respect and understanding. Our Associates work on our projects, give us advice and act as a soundboard for our ideas. They share our practice beyond Spare Tyre. We currently have five Associate Artists.

Pete Lawson

Pete is a writer who co-founded The Steam Factory and became the Arts Council Writer in Residence for Gay Sweatshop. He has written for BBC Radio 4, and television. His series, Being April, topped the ratings, on primetime BBC1 in 2002. He is currently on the core writing team for Eastenders.  Pete became involved with Spare Tyre in 1991 and has worked on numerous Spare Tyre projects with a range of communities. In 2011 he wrote landmark play Still Life Dreaming to be performed at the Edinburgh Fringe by members of Spare Tyre’s Company of Artists.

Isaac Ngugi

Isaac Ngugi is a founder partner of Unclassified Arts, which has been specialising in community theatre arts training and drama-in-education for over eighteen years. He has worked with Spare Tyre for ten years as a facilitator, mentor and director for Spare Tyre’s companies of artists both aged 60+ and with learning disabilities, including directing Trojan Women and Assistant Directing Feeble Minds. Isaac leads many of Spare Tyre’s Outreach projects. Isaac continues to develop his research into drama as a tool for learning, engaging and conflict resolution.

Alice Theobald

Alice Theobald began as a volunteer with Spare Tyre, before being employed as a paid artist and now is an Associate Artist. She is an exhibiting visual artist and designer who graduated from Goldsmiths in 2007. Alice has since worked with vulnerable adults and children in creative workshops and research and development projects. Alice’s practice aims to create immersive environments through combining art, design and performance art. She has utilised these skills with prop and costume design on Spare Tyre’s productions including Trojan Women and the forthcoming Once Upon a Time interactive storytelling programme. Alice leads on many of Spare Tyre’s Outreach projects.

Rajha Shakiry

Rajha Shakiry is a freelance theatre designer with extensive experience in a diverse range of productions. Rajha retrained in theatre design after five years in marketing following an honours degree in Mathematics. Her costume and stage designs have featured in Spare Tyre’s SAFE, Feeble Minds and Angina Monologues, and in 2011 she is designing for Still Life Dreaming to appear at the Edinburgh Fringe.
