"In a time that's ripe for new statues, there is no site of suitable scale for the statue of forgotten disabled people".
For Statues for the Unforgotten, Spare Tyre asked contributors for ideas for new statues of people who currently aren't seen enough in public discussions: women, people who experience racism, Deaf, disabled and neurodivergent people, LGBTQIA+ people, or people who were overlooked by history for another reason.
Vici Wrefford-Sinnott (Artistic Director of disabled-led theatre company Little Cog) explores the institutionalisation that was a major story of the 20th century for many disabled people who had little or no say about their own lives.
A Site of Suitable Scale references hidden and unmarked lives and deaths of disabled people but also celebrates the Civil Rights Movement of Disabled people in the UK which has fought to bring about social, political, cultural, and personal change for disabled people.
