Disability Activism
1992
July 1992 saw the start of large protests, with up to 1500 disabled people protesting against an ITV fundraiser stereotyping disabled people. Their goal was to establish better civil rights for disabled people, this activism eventually led to the Disability Discrimination Act of 1995.
The protest was part of a wider discussion about disabled people’s rights and their expression of a desire to be heard and having an input on how they are represented, themes which would become important in the work that Spare Tyre would later produce.
