You wait years to work on a project and then suddenly two come along. I’m at the very unusual situation of having two creative processes running in parallel. In April, we’ll be going into the rehearsal room with a full draft and - excitingly–pictures for the work in progress sharing of What Will Happen to the Cat?
Before that, next week the Spare Tyre team will be relocating to Scarborough, hosted by the Stephen Joseph Theatre for a week of initial research and development for Vanishing Point – working title. Vanishing Point will be a sensory show about trains, possibly tractors and the rural landscape. The show will be made for and with people living with dementia – on tour in venues and care settings as soon as we can get it funded.
Inspired by the romance, tracks and rhythms of rail travel, and the comedy, thrillers and great escapes that occur, one director, two designers, a puppeteer, a sensory practitioner and a producer will be working in a studio at SJT. The team is half Yorkshire, half London and we’ll be joined by two groups of people living with young onset dementia, thanks to our partners at Dementia Forward.
We’ll be exploring how train travel opens up vistas and the imagination, playing with the time travel possibilities of tunnels, and of course messing about with clockwork and the tragi-comic potential of the Lost and Found box.
