Call out for Scarborough-based (or local area) facilitator for our new R&D Vanishing Point
10 February 2025
we’re looking for a facilitator/performer from a global majority background and/or identifying as disabled from within Scarborough’s or the local area’s creative community.
Guest Facilitator
Dates: 17–21 March 2025 (you must be available for all dates)
Venue: Stephen Joseph Theatre and local area.
Fee: £600
Overview:
In the week of 17 – 21 March 2025, Spare Tyre will be resident at Stephen Joseph Theatre undertaking a week of research and development for our next sensory show, for people living with dementia and their carers. Inspired by trains past, present, imaginary and the rural landscapes of North Yorkshire, its working title is Vanishing Point. The creative team (Director, Rebecca Manson Jones, Designer, Jens Demant Cole, Associate Artist, Lisa Muten) who made our recent sensory hit On The Beach is joined by emerging artist and puppeteer, Emily Lloyd.
Working in Studio 2 for 5 days from 17 March, the creative team will explore ideas for a new sensory show for people living with dementia and their carers. It’s a first step R&D – we don’t expect to have a finished show by Friday. We’ll make initial explorations into themes, techniques and scenarios to form a show rooted in North and East Yorkshire: trains, steel, agriculture, the big open skies and changing seasons.
Everything we do involves co-creation to help us forge and ground our stories. We'll be including creative participatory workshops involving small groups of older people and their carers, either from care homes or local dementia support groups, visiting us at SJT or hosting a workshop.
The Role & Person Specification
You can be at any stage of your professional theatre career (age 20+) and you may or may not have experience of sensory non-verbal theatre, or working with older people living with dementia. You do need to be open to experiencing both, to be patient and kind. This will be an opportunity to learn our techniques and contribute to our process.
The opportunity will involve devising as directed by the creative team, facilitating in up to 2 participatory workshops for people living with dementia, and in an informal show and tell for members of the SJT team. Experience of improvisation, object animation, movement skills and non-verbal communication is an advantage but not a requirement.
To complete the team we’re looking for a facilitator/performer (any gender) from a global majority background and/or identifying as disabled from within Scarborough’s or the local area’s creative community.
